🌱 Beyond the Screen: A Small Learning Centre in Varanasi and the Real Meaning of Digital Education
A new OP-ED by Lenin Raghuvanshi looks at what a community-based digital learning initiative at the Mirza Ghalib Centre, Varanasi, can teach us about educational inequality, digital access and the future of learning.
Through the collaboration of Jan Mitra Nyas and ADORE, children participated in online classes in English, mathematics and science, alongside reading, writing, life skills, yoga and social awareness.
But the most powerful moment was simple: children who watched others learning began coming to the centre themselves because they also wanted to study.
The article asks an important question: Is digital education really about giving every child a device—or about creating the community, mentoring, confidence and opportunity that make technology meaningful?
The experience also highlights the role of young volunteers Karishma, Resham and Kareena, who moved from being learners to supporting younger children and developing leadership through the process.
For India, the lesson is clear:
Technology should not replace teachers.
Screens should not replace community.
Digital education should expand opportunity, dignity and participation.
The real digital revolution begins when a child who was previously outside the learning system looks at another child studying and says:
“I also want to study.”
